Expands Digital Connectivity with Delivery Robot Integration Business

2020-04-21
- Signed a business agreement for the joint development of relevant technologies and services with Woowa Brothers Corp.

- Expected to lead the business as the number one company in market dominance of new installation and maintenance.

Hyundai Elevator (CEO Seung-Bong Song) announced on the 21st that it has signed an MOU with Woowa Brothers Corp. (CEO Beom-Jun Kim) regarding the “Delivery Robot - Elevator Integration Business.”

Through this MOU, the two companies agreed to expand on △ the advancement and commercialization of the elevator - robot integration system, △ new business opportunities through trial services, and △ exchange and cooperation for the commercialization of untact robot services in the form of joint development of relevant services.

According to Strategic Analytics, a global market research institute, the market for service robots with artificial intelligence (AI) technology is expected to increase from $31 billion of the previous year (approximately 37 trillion KRW) to $122 billion (approximately 146 trillion KRW) in 2024. The demand for untact services has skyrocketed due to the spread of COVID-19. In particular, data integration technology and artificial intelligence services are in the limelight for elevators, which are the main source of vertical transportation in public facilities such as hospitals, hotels, and office buildings, as well as communal living facilities such as apartments.

For this reason, the agreement between Hyundai Elevator, which has the highest share in terms of new installation (43.9%) and maintenance (22.9%) in Korea and the third-largest elevator market in the world, and “Baedal Minjok,” the number one delivery App in Korea, is expected to create synergy in the untact service market. The two companies are planning to launch a trial service at one accommodation facility and one business facility before the end of the year.

Hyundai Elevator previously conducted an “elevator-robot” integrated room trial service with Hyundai IT and logistics automation affiliate Hyundai Movex (CEO Ki-Bong Hyun). This service took place from last October to January of this year at the Hyundai Bloomvista Hotel (Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do).

Based on the judgement that digital innovation will become a major competitive edge in the elevator industry, Hyundai Elevator is actively promoting projects to establish a digital ecosystem in the form of constructing smart factories in Chungju, Chungbuk, and Shanghai, China, while developing a Before Service with machine learning technology to predict and repair failures.

CEO Seung-Bong Song announced, “if the existing automated robot service mainly functions on flat surface areas, connectivity elevator technology enables service in all areas of the building through floor-to-floor movement,” and that “Hyundai Elevator will continue to promote new businesses in the form of development and maintenance plans of elevators for robots.”
